Dr. Rufus Ebegba, Director General/CEO, National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has said that the choice on whether to consume genetically modified products lies with Nigerians.

Dr. Ebegba said during a radio interview (August 11) in Abuja, that the law setting up the NBMA made it clear on issues of choice, as every GM product will be properly labelled leaving the choice of eating it or not to Nigerians to decide.
He called on Nigerians to trust the Federal Government on the safety of any genetically modified products that are approved for the country stressing that: “Nigerians must learn to trust their leaders and government, government took painstaking care since 2001 to establish the foundation for the introduction of genetic engineering in the agricultural sector and in 2015 established the NBMA as a safety valve to regulate the products of the technology, government mean well for the people and so we must trust the judgement of our government,” he said.

He said that the country is blessed with over 15 agricultural research institutes, 11 colleges of agriculture and several universities of agriculture that have potentials of spearheading the deployment of genetic engineering as well as producing the needed manpower for the country.
